There are several camellia colonies near the Kinoura coast at the north end of the Noto Peninsula. The grove of Tokubo Shrine in Takaya-machi, Suzu City is especially famous for its yabutsubaki or Japanese camellia, popularly known as “Tokubo-no-senbon-tsubaki.” One of them is 12 m tall and 1.6 m around the trunk. Bright red blossoms cover the area from late February through April. Camellia is the flower of Suzu City. The “Suzu Camellia Festival” is held every March. The city is promoting “Tsubaki-no-sato.” Local residents set up the “Suzu Yabutsubaki Project Council” and organize various activities including an observation meeting.
