In Ishikawa Prefecture, “yoboshi parenting” can only be observed in Noto. The “parent” farmers and their “child” (a student) form a very close relationship, like that of a real family. The yoboshi parents becomes the student’s guarantors, and the student works for the parents and helps them with ceremonies such as weddings, funerals and festivals without pay. In 2005, the yoboshi parenting farming project was launched in the Mikohara area. It is an exchange project that provides students from cities with an opportunity to experience life on a farm and farm work. According to the tradition, the farmers and students are called “yoboshi parents” and “yoboshi children” respectively. Students are able to experience life on a farm and understand the feelings of farmers. Subsequently, the farmers and students stay in touch and deepen their friendship.
