This is a traditional event held in October in Shimokarakawa, Anamizu Town, which boasts beautiful landscapes of terraced rice fields. Strong men and children wearing ropes around their waists to prevent slippage compete in lifting straw bags of newly harvested rice weighing 45 to 90 kilograms. The origin of this event dates back to the Edo period, when the district was governed by the shogun, and people suffered from heavy taxation. Rice was cultivated in hidden fields, and when the harvest was over, men competed in lifting straw bags of rice from the hidden fields, ate their fill of rice, and gave thanks for the harvest.
