This is brand-name rice produced in terraced rice paddies of the Mikohara area (Mikohara-machi, Sugaike-machi and Sengoku-machi). These largest terraced rice fields in Ishikawa are located at an altitude of 120~400m. There is a big difference in temperature between day and night, and snow meltwater flows from the mountains. These conditions help produce good rice. The rice became famous when it was awarded third prize in a national rice taste test run by Nikkei BP magazine in 1996. Its status as a premium brand-name product was confirmed after it was presented to Pope Benedict the 16th through the Apostolic Nunciature in Japan in 2005.
