A cliff hallway up Mt. Iwakura jutting out onto the Sosogi coast presents a unique landscape. Because of weathering, it looks like a countless number of Jizo statues. That is why it was named Sentaijizo (a thousand Jizo). It is composed of rhyolite, a kind of volcanic rock. When lava cooled and contracted, columnar joints formed. The combination of strong wind from the Sea of Japan and heavy rain led to the creation of Sentaijizo. This landscape speaks of the severe winter weather of northern Noto, with a strong northwesterly wind and snow. The area is known for its excellent hiking trails. From the observation deck beside the cliff, you can see not only the famous Mado-iwa rock formation, but also Nanatsujima and Hegurajima islands off the coast.
