Ruby Roman is a new type of grape that was shipped in 2008 for the first time. Since 1995, Ishikawa Agricultural Research Center has been carrying out selective examinations and trials, using the large, black type of grape, Fujiminori. It is the largest type of grape in Japan, twice the size of the large Kyoho grape, and cultivated with the greatest care. The fruit is frequently thinned out from when it is still small, and the number of bunches per branch is limited. At the time of shipment, the grapes are carefully inspected, and only bunches that satisfy the following criteria are shipped as Ruby Roman: Each grape should weigh 20g or more; the sweetness level should be 18 or higher; and the skin should be beautifully colored. If a bunch of grapes passes the test, a certification sticker is attached to it. The best bunches are tagged as PREMIUM. The grape’s name comes from the fact that it is like a shining red ruby. The peak shipping period is from early August through early September. About 120 farmers produce these grapes in Ishikawa. Since 2011, they have been shipped to the Osaka market, and recognized as the grape of the highest quality. In July 2015, a bunch of Ruby Roman grapes attracted worldwide attention when it was sold for the record-high price of one million yen at the first auction of the year.
