In the villages along the coastline of Shika Town, fire festivals are held to beckon the spirits of ancestors, or shôrai-sama, on the evening of August 13. In the central area of the town, children from the fourth year of elementary school to the third year of junior high school stand and fire a 10m-tall torch with a diameter of 1m. The flame lights up the night sky and becomes a signal to call the spirits of ancestors. In the southern area of the town, close to Hakui City, 3.6m-long torches are used. Children swing the torches left and right, crying out “Oshôrai, oshôrai!” The ancestors’ spirits are believed to spend three days with their families during the bon season.
