This is a typical ria coast. It is 225 meters at the mouth and 1.2km from there to the back. The Indented coastline stretches along 13 km in total. As there are many inlets, it got the name “Tsukumo Bay (Ninety-nine Bay). In the middle of the bay is Horaijima, where Castanopsis sieboldii, pine and Cercidiphyllum japonicum flourish. The coastal terrace around it is full of red pine, Gleichenia japonica and Woodwardia orientalis Sw. The bay is calm throughout the year and reflects luxuriant greenery; it has the atmosphere of a miniature garden. The deepest part is 25 meters deep. Over 70 kinds of seaweed grow here. This bay is the northernmost part of Japan where some of them are found. Fat greenling, Japanese rockfish, sea bream, sea fare, purple sea urchin and Rhizopsammia minuta utsuensis, etc. live in the bay. The bay is one of the scenic places that are representative of Noto’s Satoumi. It has been selected as one of the 100 Most Beautiful Landscapes of Japan.
